Welcome to the Third Row Tailgaters information page... hopefully you will find the answers to any questions you have about our group.
What is a brief history of Third Row? Third Row Tailgaters was established at Louisiana State University in 1997 by a group of then freshmen and sophomore students. In the years since then the group has grown considerably, amassing a large dedicated student membership and expanding to family and friends outside of the student body. Known for throwing the best student-run tailgating parties at LSU, Third Row's signatures include a portable flagpole currently topping out at 80 feet, two purple and gold tiger-striped vans, the infamous Natty Night, and the ever present motto "run like you stole something." Third Row has grown over the years into more than just tailgating, Third Row is now a part of the LSU experience, a part of the culture, a way of life.
How long have we been tailgating? Members of the Third Row tailgating group have been tailgating together since 1997.
How long have we been known as 'Third Row Tailgaters'? The name Third Row was adopted during the 2000 LSU football season, although the third row of the student section had been the seating location of choice for many years.
Where do we tailgate? In front of the Natatorium on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Click here for a map.
When do we tailgate? We are almost always tailgating by 6:00 AM for all home games, and we often camp out overnight once it gets later in the season and the air is cooler. We also tailgate after all home games for several hours, until the traffic clears out usually.
How do we recognize the Third Row tailgate party? It's simple, look for the 80 foot flagpole with the 'Third Row' flag or look for the two purple and gold vans. If all else fails, look for the group having the most fun, it's going to be us, I guarantee it.
Who can tailgate? Everyone is welcome at tailgate parties. Unless you're a serial killer, then you should stay away.
Are parents and other family members welcome? Of course, at any tailgate party there will be plenty of parents and other relatives, young and old, enjoying the festivities.
How much does it cost? No payment is required, but tips and donations are highly recommended to help keep the tailgate parties in top form. It would also be nice if people purchased a shirt, hat, cup or koozie, as all proceeds from merchandise sales goes straight back into the party!
What do donations go to? Helping improve the tailgating experience for everyone. Donations help us pay for any number of things, including tents for shade, sound system improvements, a new cargo van for hauling equipment, improvements to the flagpole, the generator we use to power the party, the new BBQ pit, and many other projects that add to the overall Third Row experience.
Who pays for all the beer and food? Each year we ask people to donate $20 to the 'beer fund' which goes towards paying for all the kegs throughout the season (excluding Natty Night). What's left over in this fund goes towards the food, but most of the food is paid for by Third Row members out of their own pockets.
