Help Wanted – Lawyers Defending American Democracy

Note. Lawyers Defending American Democracy, a group we featured in a webinar last fall is looking for volunteers to help with initiatives focused on protecting & strengthening our democracy and the rule of law. See below for more information opportunities and complete this short survey if you are interested. Let them know you are a member of Third Act Lawyers.

Working Groups:

Amicus Brief Working Group. This group will assist in the development of amicus briefs in court cases.
Protecting Judicial Independence Working Group. This group will work on projects to defend the judiciary against threats, protect judicial independence, and develop education campaigns addressing these issues.
Accountability Working Group. This group will focus on meticulous research and development of potential disciplinary complaints against attorneys who violate the applicable rules of professional ethics in carrying out their duties.

Special Projects:

“Why it Matters.” Participants in this project assist in the creation of content to identify the connection between executive actions and their home section in Project 2025, and explain why it matters to the public. This is an ongoing series published by the Fulcrum.
Guardians of Justice – A Call for Lawyers to Lead. Participants in this new initiative will assist in promoting the use of LDAD’s new Toolkit, designed to help lawyers step up to run for office or seek governmental appointments to leadership positions.
Students Defending American Democracy. LDAD has been working with a core group of college students dedicated to bringing the cause of democracy to universities across the country. Support is needed to engage professors and administrators in support of these efforts, including assistance with campus events that help students understand the connections between the loss of democracy and the rule of law, and the impacts on their personal freedoms.
Fundraising. LDAD is a small nonprofit organization and depends on individual contributions. Fundraising support is critical to the expansion of our work. Help can be as limited as reaching out to your networks and encouraging them to support our work, to participating in more targeted fundraising efforts.

National Resources Defense Council. NRDC works to safeguard the earth — its people, its planets and animals, and the natural systems on which all life depends.

Earthjustice. Wielding the power of law and the strength of partnership to protect people’s health, to preserve magnificent places and wildlife, to advance clean energy, and to combat climate change. Because the earth needs a good lawyer.

The Brennan Center for Justice. Working to build an America that is democratic, just, and free — for all.

Lawyers Defending American Democracy. Who knew that this could be a novel idea among some groups of lawyers. Take a look at this group’s important work. Sign up for their newsletter. Get involved.

Democracy Docket. The leading digital news platform dedicated to information, analysis and opinion about voting rights and elections in the courts.

Democracy Forward. We go to court for people and democracy. Defend, Disrupt, Build.

Society for the Rule of Law. Protecting the Constitution and the rule of law against rising threats posed by illiberal forces in society, without regard to political party or partisan affiliation.

Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. Nonpartisan and nonprofit. Formed in 1963 at the request of President John F. Kennedy to mobilize the nation’s leading lawyers as agents for change in the Civil Rights Movement.

As lawyers, we have the training to cut through a noise-filled media landscape and focus on what is actually happening in the courts, where challenges to the Trump administration’s assault on the rule of law are playing out on a daily basis. Here are some resources that will help:

Just Security: Based at the Reiss Center on Law and Security at NYU’s School of Law, this site tracks over 150 cases challenging Trump administration actions including timely updates and summaries, as well as links to pleadings and other documents.
